Autism, more correctly called Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition. It affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, processes information, and experiences the world.

🧠 What Autism Is (in simple terms)

Autism means the brain works differently, not wrongly.
People with autism may:

  • Think in very logical, visual, or detail-focused ways

  • Experience the world more intensely (sounds, lights, touch, emotions)

  • Communicate differently

  • Prefer routines and predictability

It is called a spectrum because every autistic person is different.

💬 Common Characteristics

🗣️ Communication

  • May speak later, differently, or not at all

  • May find small talk confusing

  • Often communicate better through writing, visuals, or music

🤝 Social Interaction

  • Difficulty reading facial expressions or social cues

  • May prefer solitude or a small trusted circle

  • Social interest may be present but expressed differently

🔁 Repetition & Routine

  • Strong need for routine and structure

  • Repetitive movements (stimming) like rocking or hand-flapping

  • Deep focus on specific interests

🔊 Sensory Differences

  • Sensitivity to noise, light, textures, or crowds

  • Or sometimes reduced sensitivity (seeking pressure, movement, sound)

🌈 Strengths Often Seen in Autism

Many autistic people have remarkable abilities, such as:

  • Excellent memory

  • Strong honesty and loyalty

  • Attention to detail

  • Musical, artistic, mathematical, or technical talents

  • Deep empathy (even if expressed quietly)

❤️ Important Things to Know

  • Autism is not a disease

  • It does not need to be “fixed”

  • With understanding, support, and acceptance, autistic people can thrive

  • Support needs vary across childhood, adulthood, and later life

🎵 Autism & Music (important for your work)

Music can be especially powerful because it:

  • Reduces anxiety and overload

  • Supports communication and emotional expression

  • Helps with routine, regulation, and connection

This aligns beautifully with your music-assisted wellbeing approach 💙

🌈 Autism Levels (ASD Levels 1–3)

Autism is described using three support levels.
These levels do not measure intelligence or worth — they simply describe how much support someone may need in daily life.

🟢 Level 1 — Needs Some Support

(Often called “high-functioning,” though many dislike that term)

🧠 Communication & Social

  • Speaks fluently but may struggle with social rules

  • Finds small talk confusing or exhausting

  • May miss tone, sarcasm, or facial cues

🔁 Behaviour & Sensory

  • Strong routines and preferences

  • Sensory sensitivities (noise, lights, crowds)

  • Anxiety increases with change

🌟 Strengths

  • Independent in daily life

  • Strong focus, memory, creativity

  • Often successful with understanding & minor support

🟡 Level 2 — Needs Substantial Support

🧠 Communication & Social

  • Clear difficulty with verbal and non-verbal communication

  • Limited conversation or scripted speech

  • Social interaction is challenging even with help

🔁 Behaviour & Sensory

  • Noticeable repetitive behaviours

  • Strong resistance to change

  • Sensory overload more frequent

🌟 Strengths

  • Can learn routines well

  • Thrives with structure, visuals, and calm environments

  • Music, rhythm, and routine help regulation

🔴 Level 3 — Needs Very Substantial Support

🧠 Communication & Social

  • Minimal speech or non-verbal communication

  • Great difficulty expressing needs

  • Requires support for social interaction

🔁 Behaviour & Sensory

  • Intense repetitive behaviours

  • Severe sensory sensitivities

  • Distress with change or unfamiliar environments

🌟 Strengths

  • Communicates through movement, sound, music, or visuals

  • Responds strongly to familiar voices, rhythms, and routines

  • Comforted by predictable sensory experiences

❤️ Very Important to Remember

  • Levels can change over time

  • Someone may be Level 2 socially but Level 1 cognitively

  • Autism is lifelong, not progressive

  • Every autistic person is unique

🎵 Autism & Music (perfect for your work)

Music is powerful across all levels:

  • 🎧 Calms sensory overload

  • 🧠 Supports communication without words

  • 🔁 Creates predictable routines

  • 🤍 Builds emotional safety and connection

This fits beautifully with your music-assisted wellbeing & routine-based support vision.
